Cytomegalovirus retinitis
Cytomegalovirus Retinitis Infection within the retina is prone to develop in immunosupressed individuals, and when it does so cytomegalovirus is the primary vector. Susceptible individuals are those with immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), those with widespread cancer, those receiving high-dose corticosteroids, and those with an organ transplant. The inflammation causes severe destruction of the retina along the course of the major blood vessels. Antiviral medical therapy can be effective and there is evidence that by decreasing corticosteroid therapy a favorable outcome is likely.
